Fresno City College: Cops vs Skateboarder

Posted by Sutherland Boswell on September 28th, 2009 / 1 Comment

Cell Phone VideoIf you’ve been skating awhile there’s no way you haven’t had more than a few “talks” with police officers. I know I’ve learned that sometimes it isn’t worth the hassle you get for just skating past certain buildings, so sometimes I’ll pick up my board and carry it. Even with the board in my hand, cops and security guards want to get back up on their soap boxes – which is annoying but usually harmless.

However, it wasn’t harmless for one Fresno City College student.

An officer with Fresno City College asked him to hand the skateboard over because they’re not allowed on campus. That’s when witnesses say things got out of hand. “After they took his skateboard, the cop told him to get down. He pulled out mace, sprayed him, the kid started running, another officer cornered him and tackled him to the ground.”

Story found on Boardistan from ABC 30.

I guess just carrying a skateboard is still over the line for some cops… and while I don’t think it’s usually a good idea to resist arrest, I know that the threat of police brutality is more dangerous to society than the threat of a kid carrying (or even on) a skateboard. What’s the worst experience you’ve had with police? I’ve had to listen to countless rants (even for just carrying our boards), but the only thing close to seeing actual force was when a Birmingham, AL cop threatened to taser a kid on Go Skateboarding Day. She didn’t use it, but just seeing it used as a threat to a skateboarder when there were plenty of crackheads in the area they could have been protecting us from was enough to piss me off.

So what’s your worst experience?
